Tweets by Satoshi Yamamoto about Team Magma & Team Aqua in Pokémon Adventures

Remember like two months ago when I put out a call for a translator for hire to decode a batch of Japanese tweets for me? Well, David took on the job, and thanks to his hard work, I now have some exclusive content to share with y'all. I normally don’t post manga stuff, but I make exceptions for things that are especially interesting to me, and this certainly falls in that category!

For those of you who don’t know, both the writer (Hidenori Kusaka) and the artist (Satoshi Yamamoto) of Pokémon Adventures have active Twitter accounts (@k_hidenori_ and @satoshi_swalot, respectively). At one point, Yamamoto released a series of tweets that looked back on the creation of Adventures, reminiscing about the origins of character designs, plot points, and other behind-the-scenes info. In honor of VIZ Media finally getting around to releasing the Ruby & Sapphire arc in the United States (TEN YEARS!) I’ve gotten translated all the tweets I could find where Yamamoto revealed unique tidbits about the villains of that particular storyline.

“In my brain, racked by sleep deprivation and thoughts of deadlines: ‘Huh? I don’t want to use the word 'bad guy.’ I really hate that old duality of 'good and bad.’ Can you define Team Aqua and Team Magma as 'bad’ to begin with?’ I got stuck in this loop of thoughts and became unable to set dialog in the speech bubbles.”

Click “Read More” to see all the info, but be warned–there’s spoilers if you haven’t read the story!

Note that the segments properly called “rounds” are referred to here as “chapters” instead, and that the human characters’ names are left in Japanese, for flavor. I also included pictures~!

Thanks for the submission, but please include the source next time. This is from Pixiv, so I know it wouldn’t have been hard to find.

Anonymous asked: Who's the guy with Jessie, James, and Meowth? Your tags say "Mondo." Who is that?

When the anime was just getting started in the late ’90s, Takeshi Shudo, one of the original writers on the show and the driving force behind the creation of the Team Rocket trio, wrote two audio dramas that were released in Japan only: It’s a White Tomorrow, Team Rocket! in 1998 and The Birth of Mewtwo in 1999.

Audio dramas (common in anime) are essentially “extra” episodes presented like a radio show instead of being animated, often written by the show writer(s) and always recorded by the characters’ actual voice actors. The events in these two Team Rocket CD dramas have never been firmly contradicted by anything that’s happened later on the actual show, and they give interesting backstory for several characters, so many fans consider them canon to the rest of the anime.

“Mondo” is the name of a junior rank Team Rocket agent in the White Tomorrow audio drama, and as he doesn’t have an English name, I tag stuff of his with the Japanese one. Other characters who are exclusive to these dramas are Miyamoto (Jessie’s mom, a Rocket agent who went missing while in pursuit of Mew) and Madame Boss (Giovanni’s mom, and the former head of anime Team Rocket before her “brat boy” took over the family business).
